Using ovulation is a great way to increase your chances of becoming pregnant. The tests work by detecting the amount of lutenizing hormone (LH) in urine of a woman. When there is an increase in LH, a woman's ovulation is usually within 24-48 hours. The best way to increase the likelihood of pregnancy is having sex leader until ovulation tests positive and soon after getting a positive result. It is better to have sperm present before the egg is released, because you want the semen to be there and waiting for the egg, not trying to make it really quickly before it got past the fertilization of the egg. An egg is only valid for 24 hours from the moment that was released from the ovary.
Interpretation of ovulation is not the same as interpreting the pregnancy test. With a pregnancy test, the test looking pregnancy hormone hCG. If a second line is a pregnancy test, you are pregnant. With the OPK, however, a second line is almost always present. It is simply the color of the line you need to search for. For a positive, OPK to be the test must be as dark or darker then the line of control. Most women have some amount of LH in their systems at all times, so most probably you'll notice 2 lines on the test of time. It is only when the surge happens you'll see the line get very dark. Some women have a couple of days that lead and gets progressively darker and darker, while other women to go from barely 2 lines for a blazing positive overnight.
Some women find that they have a short pulse LH. Only for this reason we recommend that you verify twice a day, when you are getting close to ovulation when you think. You do not want to miss the surge testing once a day.
Another word of caution. Do not test in the morning, or with the urine of the morning the first or second. You want to use preferably urine afternoon. This is because the first morning urine is too concentrated and you can give a false positive, because the amount of LH is always higher than in the morning. Also, some women have a surge of LH before their start time. So if you are testing at the end of your cycle and getting 2 decent lines, it may be because the period is coming, or it may be because you're pregnant! Some OPK can detect hCG as well.
